Looking Over the Information
As you view the details panel you'll see that the information is grouped into several different sections. Above the toolbar is the identification information, consisting of the waypoint code, the name and the owner. Below the toolbar you'll first see the status information like the date of placement, last log, last visit, etc. Below that you will find the cache-specific information like the type, size, difficulty and terrain. The next section is the latitude and longitude and then the cache descriptions and hints. Finally, you will see at the bottom the cache "accessories" including the travelbugs, logs, visits and waypoints. Note that not all this information will be shown if you have excluded it through settings.
Back to Details Panel
Showing the Travelbugs
When cache details are first shown the travelbugs section will only show a count of how many travelbugs are currently listed as being in the cache. To change that into a list of travelbug ID numbers and names, tap the 'Show Travelbugs' button
in the details toolbar. To hide the travelbug details, simply tap it again.
Back to Details Panel
Showing the Logs
When cache details are first shown the cache logs section will only show a count of how many logs Smache has record of for the cache. To see the details of those logs, tap the 'Show Logs' button
in the details toolbar. To hide the log details, simply tap it again.
Back to Details Panel
Showing the Visits
When cache details are first shown the cache visits section will only show a count of how many visits you have recorded with the cache. To see the details of those visits, tap the 'Show Visits' button
in the details toolbar. To hide the visit details, simply tap it again.
Back to Details Panel
Showing the Additional Waypoints
When cache details are first shown the additional waypoints section will only show a count of how many waypoints are attached to the cache. To see the location and descriptions of those waypoints, tap the 'Show Waypoints' button
in the details toolbar. To hide the waypoint details, simply tap it again.

Starting and Stopping Your GPS
Before you connect to your GPS through Smache, be sure it is turned on and that the correct port and baud rate are specified in settings. To connect, tap the 'Start GPS' button
on the navigation panel
. You will see the GPS status icon change to show an attempt to connect. After the connection is successfully made, you will see the status icon change to show a 2D or 3D lock. To stop the GPS, tap the 'Stop GPS' button
in the same location.
Back to Navigation Panel
Getting Information About the Signal![]()
Smache displays information about the GPS signal on the 'Status' panel
. Along with the satellite count and time connected, you can see positional, horizontal and vertical dillution of precision (PDOP, HDOP, VDOP). These numbers normally range from 1 to 50 and indicate the accuracy of the signal you are receiving. More accurate signals are close to 1 and decent signals are less than 3 or 4. Signals over 6 to 8 may be too unreliable to use.
Back to Navigation Panel
Getting Location and Movement Information![]()
View information about your location and movement on the 'Position' panel. This includes your coordinates, altitude, speed and direction of travel. You can copy your current location to the clipboard by tapping the 'Copy Coordinates' button
.

Working with Existing Waypoints![]()
Filtering Waypoints: Filtering waypoints is similar to filtering caches. Choose the field you want to filter by in the dropdown at the upper left, then specify a filter value in the input on the right. To run the filter, tap the 'Filter' button
. To clear the filter and show all records, tap the 'Clear Filter' button
.
Checking and Unchecking Waypoints: To check or clear waypoints, tap the 'Check Waypoints' button
or the 'Clear Waypoints' button
. To check or clear portions of the waypoint list, use the small dropdown menus to the right of each button.
Adding Waypoints to the Map: To add multiple waypoints to the map at once, check each waypoint in the waypoint list that you want to add and then tap the 'Add to Map' button
. To add a single waypoint to the map, tap-and-hold on the waypoint and choose 'Add to Map'. If a waypoint is already in the map, this option will read 'Remove from Map'.
Exporting Waypoints: To export waypoints to one of various formats, check each waypoint in the waypoint list that you want to export and then tap the 'Export' button
.
Viewing Waypoint Details: For a quick view of a waypoint and it's details, tap-and-hold on the waypoint in the waypoint list and choose 'View', or you can simply double-tap the waypoint.
Setting a Waypoint Location as Your Home Coordinates: To set your home coordinates to match a waypoint location, tap-and-hold the waypoint in the waypoint list and choose 'Set as Center'. This will modify the home coordinates in settings and update the distances in both the cache list and the waypoint list.
Editing a Waypoint: To edit a waypoint, tap-and-hold on the waypoint in the waypoint list and choose 'Edit'.
Deleting Waypoints: To permanently delete a waypoint or group of waypoints, check each waypoint in the waypoint list that you would like to delete and then tap-and-hold on one of the waypoints and choose 'Delete Checked'.
Back to Navigation Panel
Creating Waypoints![]()
Creating a Waypoint from Input Coordinates: If you know the coordinates of the waypoint you want to create, tap the 'New Waypoint' button on the 'Create Waypoint' panel
. In the waypoint dialog, enter the name, note and coordinates and then tap 'OK'. The new waypoint will automatically be added to the waypoint list.
Averageing a New Waypoint: To average a new waypoint from your GPS location, be sure your GPS is connected and you have a lock. Choose a sample count (the number of GPS points taken into account) and a name and note, then tap the 'Start Waypoint' button
. You can modify the name and note up until the last sample point is taken. The information will then be calculated and a waypoint will be created and added to the waypoint list. If the 'Add Point to Map' option is checked, the waypoint will be automatically added to the map.
Back to Navigation Panel
Creating Tracks![]()
To collect a new track, be sure your GPS is connected and you have a lock. Choose a sample interval (the number of seconds between track points) and specify a name and note. To begin recording the track, tap the 'Start Track' button
and begin traveling along your path. If you need to pause the track, you can do so by tapping the 'Pause Track' button
. Tap the same button again to resume recording. When you are finished traveling your path, tap the 'Stop Track' button
. At that point your track data along with the name and note you specified will be collected and the new track will be added to the waypoint list. By checking the 'Add to Map' option, the track will be displayed on the map when you are finished as well as while it is being collected.
Back to Navigation Panel
Working With the Map![]()
Panning and Zooming: The pan and zoom tools are located in the top left of the navigation panel. Use the 'Pan' buttons to move directly north, south, east and west. Use the 'Zoom In' button
and the 'Zoom Out' button
to decrease and increase the map scale. Using the pan buttons will de-activate the 'Follow Position' tool
. Using the zoom buttons will de-activate the 'Auto-zoom' tool
.
Adding Marks: A mark is a simple, temporary point item that you can use to quickly mark your location. To place a mark, tap the 'Add Mark' button
above the map. Marks persist until they are either removed or Smache is closed.
Setting a Destination: You have the option of setting any waypoint, cache or additional waypoint as your destination. To set the destination, choose the item by name from the destination dropdown above the map. Choosing a destination will automatically center the map at that location and de-activate the 'Follow Position' tool
. If your GPS is connected, the distance to the destination will then be shown above the destination dropdown and the destination pointer will become visible in the compass.
Using the Compass: If your GPS is connected, the compass will give you feedback about your direction and destination. The compass assumes that you are holding your pocket pc upright (the black barin the compass should point away from you). Based on that, the blue 'N' pointer will point north. If you have a destination specified, the red 'D' pointer will point to the destination. Note that the compass can only register a direction if you are moving, and error movement may make the compass show incorrect information if you are stopped or moving slowly.
Showing Labels: You can label all the items in your map by tapping the 'Label' button
above the map. Note that if you are zoomed out too far, the labels may overlap.
Keeping your Position Centered: If your GPS is connected, you can keep your position centered by tapping the 'Follow Position' button
above the map. Manually panning will turn off the 'Follow Position' feature automatically.
Using Auto-zoom: If your GPS is connected and you have a destination specified, you can tap the 'Auto-zoom' button
to turn on the auto-zoom mode. The auto-zoom mode will keep your position and your destination in view and at an optimal scale at all times. This means that as you get closer to your destination, the map will automatically zoom in, and as you get further away, the map will automatically zoom out. Manually zooming will turn off the auto-zoom mode. For best results with auto-zoom, be sure that either the 'Follow Position' mode
is on or the destination is at the center of the map.
Selecting Items: To select an item in the map, tap it once. You will see the item's name popup to show that it has been selected. To unselect it, tap anywhere in the map once again. Any map context menu options that are chosen while an item is selected will affect that item. Note that if your GPS is connected, the map draw slows to the GPS sample rate (one second). As a result, it may take a second for the popup to show after you have selected an item.
Converting Items to Waypoints: You can convert any item in the map to a waypoint. Select the item you want to convert, then tap-and-hold on the map and choose 'Convert to Waypoint'. A new waypoint will be created and added to the waypoint list. Note that the item in the map will NOT be replaced by the new waypoint.
Locating an Item in the Cache or Waypoint List: If the item you select is a cache or a waypoint, you can bring it up in the cache list or waypoint list. Tap-and-hold on the map and choose 'Locate'. Note that Smache will not modify a filter to find the item. If the item is not in the current filter, it will not be found.
Opening the Cache Details: If the item you have selected is a cache you can show the cache details. Tap-and-hold on the map and choose 'Details'.
Removing Items from the Map: You can remove an item from the map by selecting it and choosing 'Remove' from the tap-and-hold menu. If you want to remove all items from the map, tap-and-hold on the map and choose 'Remove All'.

The Distance Tool![]()
Smache can calculate distance between latitude/longitude pairs. Simply enter the coordinates for the two locations into the distance panel, choose a distance unit and tap the 'Calculate' button
. The results you see are "great circle" distances.
Back to Tools Panel
The Conversion Tool![]()
Smache can convert between latitude/longitude formats of decimal degrees, decimal minutes and degrees-minutes-seconds. Simply begin entering a value into the appropriate text field and the values of the other two formats will be calculated as you type. If the value you enter cannot be parsed to the expected format correctly, Smache will parse as much of the value as possible but you may get erroneous values in the other two format fields. This, however, should be immediately noticable. If the value you enter is impossible or contains invalid characters, the other two format fields will show NaN (Not a Number).
Back to Tools Panel
The Encryption Tool![]()
To encrypt or decrypt a hint code, enter it into the appropriate text field on the encryption panel. Smache only performs ROT13 encryption.
Back to Tools Panel
The Notes Tool![]()
The notes panel is purely a miscellaneous 'white board'. Content on the notes panel is not saved when Smache is closed.
